The History of FishHer :  Columbia Pacific CommUNITY Alliance

FishHer is a new organization based in Ilwaco, dedicated to promoting sustainable fishing practices and empowering women in the fishing industry. Founded after the devastating Ilwaco Marina fire, with the vision of creating a more inclusive and environmentally conscious fishing community,  FishHer organizers, led by Amy Sharp, set out to challenge the traditionally male-dominated industry and promote sustainable fishing practices.

Growth and Expansion

As FishHer gained traction, it began to attract attention from broader circles. Grants and donations from environmental organizations and local businesses provided the necessary funding to expand their efforts. The organization launched a series of educational programs aimed at both seasoned fishers and newcomers. These programs covered topics such as sustainable fishing techniques, the importance of marine conservation, and the role of women in fishing history.

Partnerships and Collaborations

WTA members collaborated with FishHer recently to support hatchery managers in dividing coho smolts into net pens, an act of stewardship that directly benefits salmon populations and the future of both sport and commercial fishing.

FishHer also forged strategic partnerships with universities, environmental groups, and governmental agencies. These collaborations facilitated research initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and the development of new policies to support sustainable fishing practices. By working together with like-minded organizations, FishHer amplified its impact and reach.

FishHer was awarded grants that will enable the organization to provide new survival suits to fishermen who attend an appreciation luncheon in Ilwaco in April 2025.  WTA has made a donation to help with expenses of this event.
